We hiked the Cove to Lake Trail in La Quinta, CA on Valentine's Day. We had the most pleasant surprise when we saw 5 bighorn sheep near our trail. Watch the above 10 minute video.
On Thursday, January 28th, we planned on meeting a hiking group at a truck stop to go to the Ladder Canyon hike. We waited awhile but no one showed up so we decided to drive directly to Painted Canyons. Now we know why there was a "no show".... the road to the trailhead was closed at the Coachella Canal due to the recent rains.
So now what do we do? We were so disappointed, that we just couldn't go directly back home. We decided to find another hiking trail near by. We drove around looking for trails but most was private property. We ended up going to Lake Cahuilla. We've hiked from The Cove To Lake Trail near Boo Hoff before, but thought it would be interesting to hike starting from the lake this time.
There was a network of trails though the rocky terrain on the south side of Lake Cahuilla. The rapid change of elevation provided some dramatic views of the eastern end of the Coachella Valley.

We went hiking in La Quinta yesterday morning. Our plan was to hike the Boo Hoff Trail but found out it was closed. To protect the Big Horn Sheep during the lambing season, this trail along with several others are closed from January 1st to June 30th.
After walking two miles and found out Boo Hoff was off limits, we decided to hike the Cove to Lake Trail. If you've been following my video blog, you will see we hiked this trail on December 20, 2009. Only this time around, we discovered a cast iron or bronze horse statue sitting on top of a rocky hill. It's funny how we didn't notice the statue when we took this same hike before. The horse statue was as big as life, how could we have missed it? Unless it was just put there. Who knew?

Last Thursday, we hiked the Cove To Lake Trail in La Quinta. We started our 3 mile trek at the East Cove Trailhead parking lot and ended at Lake Cahuilla Trailhead. Some areas felt like we were walking on a beach, there was a lot of loose sand and gravel. Other areas were hilly with a lot of big rocks to climb and some broken glass along the way. I'm so glad I wore my regular hiking boots.
Above is a map of the trail we took (click on image to enlarge). We saw a beautiful private golf course hidden in the canyon.
This hike I felt was low-to-moderate intensity, except for one extremely hilly climb. At one point, I started to sweat and got out of breath. That was definitely a good cardiac stimulation. I really enjoyed the desert scenic views.
