Flying the P-51 Mustang

On April 26, 2010, we went to the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal to take pictures and watch our friend, Jim Cavan, fly a vintage plane called the P-51 Mustang. Jim is a World War II veteran aviator who served as a transport pilot in the Army Air Force in 1944.

Flying the P-51, fighter aircraft, was one of Jim’s things to do on his “bucket list.” Well, last Monday his wish came true and he finally was able to check it off the list! Watch the above video.

Not only did Jim have an exciting memorable day flying the P-51, he also was surprise to see himself on the front page of our local newspaper, The Desert Sun. Way to go, Jim!

This event was part of The Collings Foundation 110 cities tour that was held in Thermal. The tour consisted of three vintage aircrafts, the B-17, B-24 and the P-51. Chuck Gardner, the pilot for the P-51 Mustang tour, is a vintage aircraft specialist and an excellent instructor.
