Praying Mantis?

I walked outside and almost stepped on the above insect. Not sure what it is. It looks like a grasshopper, but it's too skinny. It could be one of those praying mantis but it's not praying. First time I ever saw one of these in the desert. I wonder what it is.

It's definitely a praying mantis. We used to catch them and keep them in a terrarium--and then try to catch flies for them to eat!
