Today was breezy and sunny around 82 degrees in Palm Desert. Not bad for January, considering it's snowing in other parts of the country. This evening I made a healthy dessert using my new toaster oven. I peeled and sliced two green apples adding some raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar and almonds in a small oval dutch baking bowl. Baked at 350 Fahrenheit for one hour. Then added Vanilla Almond Breeze. Boy that was good!

It's so nice to be able to just jump across the I10 to the Coachella Valley Preserve for a quick and easy hike. Today we explored a different trail in a canyon west of Willis Palms. There was no big drama like last weeks hike climbing out of a cave with a rope. This trek was around 8 miles going through sand and 700 feet elevation. It was a beautiful day for hiking. A couple of years ago we hiked the Grottos in Mecca Wilderness and didn't think it was too challenging. This time the conditions were tough because mother nature made some changes. On my walk today at Wiggins Park I heard a bird squawking loudly way up on top of a large pine tree. At first I thought it was a Bald Eagle. However, after researching on the internet I found out it was an Osprey, sometimes known as a Sea Hawk. The Osprey's diet consists almost exclusively of fish and nest near water.

This Sunday we went to the Tamale Festival in Indio, CA. The first place we went to was Grandma Lupe's. There was a long line just like all the previous years (the tamales are excellent). We decided not to stand in line for two and half hours, Instead we sampled a couple of other vendors. We went to my sister's house for Thanksgiving this year. Guess what? I'm back! Even though I haven't been hiking the last couple of weeks, the guys were. Gordie found a new hidden trail to hike at the Coachella Valley Preserve. It reminded us of the Ladder Hike - Mecca Hills only without ladders. So we decided to call it The Ladderless Hike. It was an easy five mile trek that took us a little over two hours to complete.
